Now that school is over, this blog is less of my concern. But I am somewhat determined to keep it going. I still love coffee, but I am just on a break.

Simpliest Coffee Ever
Posted by richelleirish on April 21, 2009

With my small college coffee budget, I found that when I mix one packet of dry coffee creamer with one packet of sugar, along with 1/2 a packet of hot chocolate, I create heaven.

Past woo-whoo Coffee Beliefs

Venice and Turkey in the 1500’s
A Venetian ambassador to Turkey back in 1571 wrote back home, and basically said that coffee caused men to become homosexuals. He saw Turkish men going to bath houses (where coffee was served), and into coffee houses absent of women. And soldiers were considered to be homosexual because of their coffee drinking habits. Along with that, there was an idea back then that you could actually change your sexuality, your body, and even your genitalia (a penis would slowly shrink and turn inside out, creating a vagina) by drinking or eating certain drinks or foods. So logically, coffee caused men to become homosexuals, and perhaps even turn into women if given enough time. Thankfully, to the delight of many coffee-drinking men, this never happened.
London in the 1600’s
The “Maidens of London” blamed coffee for their husbands lack of sexual interest. Coffeehouses were really for men only (although pubs and taverns were for all). When brothels were moved above coffeehouses in the mid 1600s, many men would have coffee, a good political discussion, and then move upstairs to visit a prostitute for a final treat. When they would come home, they weren’t interested in having sex with their wives, and thus coffee was blamed for men’s lack of interest in the bedroom. Of course the result was that women tended to be anti-coffee, and men were pro-coffee. The wives became so furious that they created a petition against coffee!
Some quotes from the petition include:
“Coffee leads men to trifle away their time, scald their chops, and spend their money, all for a little base, black, thick, nasty, bitter, stinking nauseous puddle water.
…excessive use of that newfangled, abominable, heathenish liquor called coffee, which riffling nature of her choicest treasures, and drying up the radical moisture, has so eunucht our husbands, and crippled our more kind gallants, that they are become as impotent as age, and as unfruitful as those deserts where that unhappy berry is said to be brought.”

Weight Loss not so possible with Coffee
Posted by richelleirish on April 15, 2009
We all can agree that coffee is, for one, addictive, two, its a stimulant and three, it alters your mood. But, do we every really think about the long term effects? One of the major issues that at least I consider is coffee’s effect on our weight. According to yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com, coffee is not good for weight loss.
There are two basic reasons coffee is a problem for the person trying to lose weight. The first reason is psychological, the second physiological.
Coffee fits neatly into the receptors for a brain chemical known as adenosine, which is partly responsible for calming you down. By interrupting the activity of adenosine, coffee makes you feel awake and wired. You may think that’s a good thing, but consider that virtually every study of PMS has implicated caffeine as a major culprit. The added stimulation and nervousness from the coffee makes you feel edgy at exactly the time that feeling calm would be a blessing. And the blood sugar fluctuations it produces contributes enormously to cravings. Coffee is socially connected to rituals that involve eating. Many of these eating rituals, in turn, are connected to snacks and breaks, fast-food breakfasts and desserts.
Coffee stimulates the adrenals, the glands responsible for stress hormones. The constant assault on these poor glands, from coffee, sugar, stress and daily life, can ultimately lead to a condition known as adrenal exhaustion.
Coffee plays havoc with your blood sugar. The body treats a coffee jolt as a “stress response” much like the adrenals shooting a jolt of adrenaline into the system. This adrenaline response was a survival mechanism for our caveman ancestors; it signaled danger from a woolly mammoth and told the body to prepare for fight or flight. It signaled the body to release sugar into the blood, to be used as fuel for the muscles (which would be either clubbing that mammoth or climbing the nearest tree). But nowadays, it just signals the release of sugar. With no ensuing flight or flight, the sugar signals a release of insulin, and before you know it, after a couple of hours of jitteriness, your blood sugar is in the toilet, and you’re crashing and burning and reaching for … guess what? I’ll give you a hint: It’s not Brussels sprouts and steak.
Coffee also increases urinary secretion of important minerals such as magnesium, potassium and sodium and uses up a fair amount of vitamin B1. Not only that, the coffee plant itself is a virtual repository for toxins such as pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
So in conclusion, yourtotalhealth insists that coffee isnt good for the body in the longterm, even if its short term effects are useful. But, I still love coffee! To read more about this, go to:

Who knew?
Posted by richelleirish on April 1, 2009
Who knew that there were multiple uses for coffee grounds?
1. According to RainforestCoffee.com, the pH balance of coffee grounds is 4.5, which is perfect for your skin. This site recommends that people use coffee grounds as a health and skin care process to heal skin allergy problems, remove facial wrinkles, prevent dandruff and remove aging spots
2. Another use for coffee grounds is for pest control. Coffee grounds are known to bother ants and worms. A good way to get rid of ant hills is to mix coffee grounds with hot water.
3. Also, mixing coffee grounds in garden soil will enrich the garden to provide nutrition for healthy growth. For directions, Starbucks has a webpage about it: http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/compost.asp.
4. By steeping grounds in hot water, you can make brown dye for fabric, dye wood scratches in furniture and even Easter eggs.
5. And a fifth interesting use for coffee grounds is for a Cellulite reducer. The crazy process is on http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/diet-fitness/cellulite-natural-cellulite-remedies.html .
